Acid reflux can happen to anyone and everyone. More than 1/3 of Americans suffer from this condition. Since it is so common, it is a bit surprising that many people don’t do what to do when it comes to acid reflux. The piece that follows includes lots of ideas for managing the problem.

Do not eat your dinner less than three hours before you go to bed. By keeping your body upright after eating, your food is digested more easily. If you lay on your back, the acid will come back up through your esophagus. So you should remain active and upright for a couple of hours before you hit the sack at night.

TIP! Stop smoking if you want to get rid of acid reflux. Smoking causes and worsens acid reflux symptoms.

Do you smoke? If so, you need to quit now. Smoking can actually make your acid reflux much worse. It also slows digestion and increases acid production in the stomach while slowing down the production of saliva. It also weakens the muscles of the esophageal sphincter as well. Therefore, quitting the cigarettes must be a priority.

Stress can cause acid reflux. When you are stressed, your body naturally produces more stomach acid. Try to do something relaxing after each meal. For example, you might indulge in yoga, reading or solving a crossword puzzle.

TIP! To thicken the mucuous lining of the stomach, try slippery elm. The extra mucous provides protection from acid.

You must watch the type of foods you eat when it comes to your acid reflux. Acid reflux sufferers have some trigger foods that may cause it. You should avoid your triggers in the evenings once you know what they are.

Elevating the top of your bed can help. You can do this by putting a brick under the headboard. You can also prop your head up with pillows. You want the head to be six inches higher than the foot of the bed. By keeping your upper body elevated, you can prevent stomach acid from rising while sleeping.

Don’t wear tight clothes. Belts, pantyhose, waistbands and other restrictive clothing put too much pressure on your stomach. When you wear clothes that are uncomfortably tight, a great deal of pressure is exerted on your stomach. This pressure can make your acid reflux worse. Make sure that your stomach is not constricted by your clothing.

As previously mentioned, millions of Americans have acid reflux. Don’t let acid reflux win. Fight back. Reduce your discomfort by following this advice.
