You need to be motivated if you want to be successful when you decide to stop smoking. Think of the benefits that come with quitting. One of them will be adequate to motivate you when it gets tough. It not only promotes general good health and the health of those around you and gets rid of a major cost center in your life, but it also helps you lower your lung cancer risk. So keep reading to get advice for starting your quest to quit smoking.

Ensure you go about it one step at a time. Quitting is a process. Do not worry about how you are going to cope until next month, or the year after. Take it one day at a time and as each day turns into another, your efforts to quit will gather into a smoke free future.

TIP! Try to make it as easy as possible on yourself to quit smoking. Avoid going cold turkey.

Some great ways to get in shape, stay active and distract yourself from smoking include participating in an exercise program, and signing up for the local gym. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. If you don’t exercise, start off slowly with a few walks. Before you begin any fitness program, you should first consult your doctor.

Make sure you get sufficient sleep as you attempt to stop smoking. Not getting adequate sleep can sometimes lead to cravings. There are usually fewer people around late at night to help you stop yourself from taking just one more smoke for the day. Optimize your health and reduce your cravings by sleeping for at least eight hours per night.

Delay Tactic

TIP! Try to distract yourself when you are planning on smoking a cigarette. Take a brief walk before you give yourself permission to smoke, or finish a glass of water.

When the urge to smoke becomes overwhelming, try using a delay tactic. With the delay tactic, you tell yourself that you will have a smoke in just ten minutes and go do something else. After those ten minutes are up, distract yourself with something else. Generally, a 10 minute delay will be all you need to get over the urge to smoke. If you still feel the urge, repeat the process! Tell yourself you’ll wait five to ten minutes before smoking.

Quitting smoking takes a solid, lifetime commitment. Review your reasons for quitting smoking on a regular basis, so that you don’t lose motivation and give up. Follow the advice you read, so that you can stop smoking for good.
